UPDATE: GSFA would like to make a correction on the last post senate bill 168 the “Moe Baxter” This bill would allow the elimination of state tax on any cancer benefit received by firefighters. GSFA will be in contact with our congressional representatives and address this misfortune of federal taxation on this benefit.

The Michael Moe Baxter Act to stop cancer benefits from being taxed has been introduced!!!!!

PLEASE contact your State Representative to support HB 168.

The "Chief Michael Moe Baxter" Act

Context: Georgia Firefighters are currently require to have a cancer insurance policy, however they are also required to pay taxes on the benefits of this policy. The passing of this bill will allow the benefits of the firefighter cancer bill to be tax free.

Thank you for your support in alleviating the financial stress many in the fire service face while battling cancer.

House of Representative Kasey Carpenter introduced an Amendment to the Firefighter cancer bill to help eliminate taxes paid on the Lump Sum amount after being diagnosed with cancer.

Chief Moe told us on November 30th, after he shared his cancer testimony, that if we could change the taxed part, that would be great for our Georgia Firefighters. He had to pay $6600 on taxes for Federal and lump sum from his $25,0
00 he received.

While this bill was originally designed to be similar to our Firefighter Cancer Insurance, it has been changed a few times as it has passed through committees. The House passed it with a reduction in lump sum benefit from the original $10,000 to $3,000 and a long-term disability benefit.
