Awards Program
The Georgia State Firefighters Association (GSFA) provides recognition opportunities for outstanding firefighters through its award program. Since 1972, GSFA has recognized firefighters through its annual recognition program.
Award Recipients are recognized at the Georgia Fire Service Conference in September and at the Firefighters Recognition Day ceremonies held at the State Capitol in February.
Awards are given in the following areas:
- Firefighter of the Year
- Rookie of the Year
- Educator of the Year
- Company Officer of the Year
- Instructor of the Year
- Life Saving Valor Award: Report of Meritorious Act
2023 Award Recipients
- Company Officer of the Year: Joshua Brewer - Macon Bibb County Fire Department
- Educator of the Year: Carell Rembert Sr. - Macon Bibb County Fire Department
- Firefighter of the Year: Phillip Merck - Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services
- Instructor of the Year: Arthur Parker IV - Macon Bibb County Fire Department
- Life Saving Valor Award: Roswell Fire Department & Griffin Fire Rescue
- Rookie of the Year: Robert Husted – Macon Bibb County Fire Department

One major initiative is the development and launch of the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS), which will replace the legacy NFIRS. We kicked off NERIS development just 10 months ago as a partnership between USFA, DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), and in collaboration with the fire service at-large.
