From Basic to Advanced Search – Chris Shore

From Basic Search to VEIS covers an array of topics ranging from performing a basic oriented search to walking the walls and conducting expanded VEIS operations coupled with victim removal. This class places an emphasis on communication and team dynamics. Students will be presented with the opportunity to challenge themselves to think on their feet and do more than go through the motions of searching. Students will be shown that there is more to searching than a conga line hugging the wall. Our class allows students to utilize our prop to repeatedly breach a window during the VEIS portion and addresses expanding the search beyond the initial point of entry. The TIC assisted section of our course provides students the opportunity to learn the benefits and limitations of this technology. In another station we focus on utilizing an anchor person who coordinates the search and leads the way during the oriented search part of the class. We also cover basic two person search in a back to basics refresher that helps reinforce the fundamentals to ensure a successful search is completed or what to do when conditions do not allow for more advanced techniques. In the back to basics portion we focus heavily on thinking about what you are encountering while searching as well as developing a victim profile when you locate a victim and ensuring that you use any information gained to potentially locate additional victims.

Swift Water Tactics – Daniel Macon

This class is a overview of swift water operations strategies and tactics. The course will be hands on course that covers rope skills, hydrology, and rescue techniques. Join us in the largest urban white water course in the Southeast.

Forcible Entry: The Basics of B&E  Joe Thurmond

We will conventionally force our way into doors and buildings using hand tools. However, when there is an obstacle or obstruction, what do you do? We will discuss and train different methods for the Art of Breaking and Entering within the Fire Service. We will utilize the use of saws and equipment found on most Fire apparatus.

As we enter the closing days of this Legislative Session, we have some decisions to make about HB 451, PTSD Insurance Coverage. While this bill was originally designed to be similar to our Firefighter Cancer Insurance, it has been changed a few times as it has passed through committees. The House passed it with a reduction in lump sum benefit from the original $10,000 to $3,000 and a long-term disability benefit.
