GSFA 8 DISTRICTS
GSFA MEMBERSHIP SUMMARY BY COUNTY
How does YOUR county stack up? President Dixon in his article for the Spring Issue of the magazine asked this question, and the map provided with the article would not reproduce in color and would print as greyscale, negating the purpose of the map. So we decided to make this a standard posting on the website on the website for your review. Will you accept his challenge to help eliminate all of the counties showing up WHITE on the map (which means no members in that county)?
 Firefighter's Recognition Day
40th Annual Firefighter's Recognition Day
Sponsored by  Georgia State Firefighters Association.

ATLANTA STATE CAPITOL
. Now set by law for the first Tuesday in February, Tuesday, February 7, 2012, will mark the 40th Annual Firefighters Recognition Day held at the State Capitol to recognize and pay tribute to our firefighting community. Several different activities are being planned for this day, and a crowd in excess of 500 is expected at the State Capitol to take part in the activities.  Below is a tentative outline of the day’s schedule:

8:00 a.m.
Contingent of fire apparatus from throughout the State begins arriving for staging at Turner Field (Gold Lot & Green Lot) and subsequent deployment around the Capitol for the Recognition Day Ceremonies. (All fire personnel coming in with apparatus must log-in at Turner Field for deployment assignment. GMAG Rules of Engagement can be accessed at our website and GMAG website www.gmag.org.  Following the Burn Foundation Luncheon (approx. 2:00 p.m.), firefighters will return to their apparatus and to the Gold Lot for de-mobilization).

8:00 a.m.
State Insurance Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens will host a continental breakfast for firefighters. Local fire marshals will also be deputized during this time. The function will be held at the State Capitol Building in the South Wing on the second floor.

10:30 a.m.
40th ANNUAL FIREFIGHTERS RECOGNITION CEREMONIES at the State Capitol (South Wing, second floor). Now set by law for the first Tuesday in February, the Firefighters Recognition Day sponsored by the Georgia State Firefighters Association honors the commitment and sacrifices made by firefighters in their communities on a daily basis. Invited speakers include the Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner, Attorney General, Speaker of the House and several key Committee Chairs.

The Ceremonies will officially be called to order by GSFA President Scott Carter and will commence at 10:30 a.m. with the presentation of colors by the Cartersville Fire Department Honor Guard, and music by the Valdosta Fire Department Bagpipe Band, with taps played by Lee Parker of the Forsyth County Fire Department, and the National Anthem sung by Jeff Braswell of the Colquitt-Miller County Fire Department (tentative).

Firefighters and guests are requested to be assembled in the South Wing of the Capitol by 10:00 a.m. All award recipients are requested to check in upon arrival with a GSFA Officer, or CEO Georgia Ann Smith, for program placement instructions.

During the ceremonies the Governor will acknowledge and applaud contributions made by ALL fire service personnel in Georgia, and also recognize and present commendations to award recipients of the Georgia State Firefighters Association, as well as award recipients from two other fire service organizations.

12:30 p.m.
A luncheon sponsored by the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation (GFBF) will follow the Capitol ceremonies, and will be held at the Georgia State Student Center on Courtland Street. Reservations are not being taken – first come, first served basis. For further information on the luncheon contact the GFBF at 404-320-6223, or 800-273-2876, or visit their website at www.gfbf.org.

2:00 p.m.
Following the Luncheon, firefighters with apparatus will proceed to the Gold Lot/Turner Field for de-mobilization. (For directions on staging of apparatus at Turner Field, visit the GSFA website and click on the link for GMAG directives).

We encourage all fire departments to send a contingent of firefighters, and apparatus, to Firefighters Recognition Day on Tuesday, February 7th, and also to attend the 6th annual fire service legislative dinner at the Freight Depot in Atlanta on Monday evening, February 6th.  Letters/invitations have been mailed to all legislators and  fire departments about the fire service appreciation dinner, and firefighters and fire chiefs are encouraged to contact their legislators and urge them to attend this dinner. RSVP’s requested for appreciation dinner to 770-914-7774. We need your help to make a good showing at both of these events this year.
2012 Firefighters Recognition Day
2011 FIREFIGHTERS RECOGNITION DAY
Congratulations to our Recognition Day
co-sponsors on another successful event!

Everything went smoothly as can be considering the fact that we had a new Governor in office, new elected officials, and numerous new legislators and committee chairs. But at least this year the Governor was present, and the Legislature was in session. This was indeed a blessing, because we normally run afoul of the governor’s conference, which draws the governor away some years, and the legislative recess has plagued this event for a couple of years.

At 8:00 a.m. trucks began arriving for deployment around the Capitol, and swearing in ceremonies were conducted at 9:30 a.m. by Commissioner Hudgens. The 2011 event was well attended, and we had our full complement of speakers on hand to meet and greet the firefighters. President Carter even had the opportunity to sing ‘happy birthday’ to the first lady of the State! Now how much better can it get than that! Our thanks and appreciation go to all of the elected officials who took the time from their hectic schedules to pause with us for a few moments to recognize and thank our public safety community of firefighters for the job they do every day, rain or shine, for what is too often a ‘thankless’ job.

I also want to express special appreciation to our Honor Guard, the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department, our bagpipe band, Valdosta Fire Department, and to our bugler, Lee Parker of Forsyth County Fire Department, who played ‘TAPS”. A lot of effort and coordination is required FAR, FAR IN ADVANCE for the recognition day event (Governor’s schedule, other speakers, scheduling of Capitol building, arrival of fire apparatus & deployment, Commissioner’s breakfast and swearing in of fire marshals, the Burn Foundation’s luncheon, honor guard and bagpipe band, bugler, speaker invitations, just to name a few). This is a very complex event to schedule and one not easily cancelled or postponed. There are several entities that are involved with us in the recognition day activities, and without them it would be hard to ‘pull off’ the event each year. From the commissioner’s breakfast (with lots of coordination and planning on that end), and the Burn Foundation’s luncheon (even more coordination and planning), to the hour when the last fire truck pulls away from the Capitol, those of us involved with the activities do not draw a easy breath until the tail lights on the last departing truck are seen. And last but certainly not least, although it takes a lot of ADVANCE planning and coordination to set up and plan the day, it would all be useless if the firefighters did not show up to appreciate our efforts and to be appreciated themselves by all of the elected officials. Firefighters are probably the most admired of any profession, and of course we want to keep them in the spotlight as much as possible and make our public officials aware of just what they do in their respective communities and the hazards they face on a daily basis as they go about their job of protecting the citizens of this great state.

President Carter in his article for the spring issue of the magazine talks about the Line of Duty Death Memorial Service held each year at the Georgia Public Safety Center in Forsyth, and his impression and poignant portrayal of the young daughter of one of the fallen firefighters being honored. As he mentions, this just really brings home the fact that although the number of LODD deaths each year is decreasing, even the death of one firefighter is one too many.
